Leadership Action Projects (LAPs) are an integral component of the Leadership Brevard program curriculum. From LEAD Brevard’s point of view, the process of learning group process skills, evolving team leadership, and working within the community to conceive, plan and implement a solution to a real local need is an important leadership experience. LAPs bring together teams of Leadership Brevard participants with other community leaders.
The purpose of the LAP is to address a problem or issue identified by a local non-profit or city/county municipality. The projects use the talents, skills, and professional capabilities of the Leadership Brevard class members to help the organization fulfill its specific mission while at the same time our participants learn the intricacies of Brevard County from another perspective, connect with a specific organization and build leadership skills outside of their workplace. Several LAPs are undertaken each year and result in community impact translated as numbers. The numbers represent only a portion of the value that is received by both the participating nonprofits and the class members as participants in a “learning laboratory."

Leadership Brevard’s class 2017 March session was sponsored by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and the atmosphere was perfect for conversations about ‘Encouraging Innovation’ as the theme of the day. Engineering a Competitive Innovation Economy featured comments from Jenna Buehler, Co-founder, Groundswell Startups (and a LEAD Brevard 2017 4 under 40 finalist); Derek Gores, Derek Gores Gallery; Adam Hoffmann, UI/UX designer, program manager, and strategist and Alex Rudloff, founder, More Than Theory (a LEAD Brevard 4 under 40 recipient in 2013). Emerging business entrepreneurs have an increasingly large impact on our local economy and bring new ideas to work and the way to work. |

LEAD Brevard board member Dale Ketcham, Chief Strategic Alliances, Space Florida shared information around the Cape Canaveral Spaceport and its role in ‘Broadening and Deepening the Space Coast’. Class members were able to learn about Blue Origin and their vision for Florida firsthand from Orbital Launch Site Director, Scott Henderson. The logo for Blue Origin has a myriad of design elements, all with a connection to the company and the founder, Jeff Bezos. "Gradatim Ferociter" is Latin for "step by step, ferociously" and is a guide for how the company works to design and build rockets for human spaceflight. The hourglass with wings in between the banner symbolizes human mortality. The tortoises reaching for the stars allude to the story of The Tortoise and the Hare. Finally, the tortoises are holding a plaque with orbital altitudes above the earth.

Judy Blanchard, Vice President of Industry Relations, CareerSource Brevard led the class through a discussion of how that organization is working to identity and create the workforce for the future that will support innovation and commercial space activity. |

The concept of innovation as a family ‘labor of love’ and research leading to new cures for rare diseases was shared by Gabriel Rothblatt of United Therapeutics Corporation. It’s amazing to learn of or to be reminded of the talent that calls Brevard home. |

Dear Leadership Brevard Alumni – Share your Story – “I AM LEAD BREVARD”
LEAD Brevard’s mission is working together to strengthen our community by inspiring people to lead. To showcase the impact ‘YOU’, as a Leadership Brevard graduate, is making in our community, we’re gathering the stories of the connections and successes that you have; this quick 6 question survey (estimate 5 – 8 minutes to answer) begins the ‘data collection’ process of the stories that represent LEAD Brevard. In aggregate, the information you share will be used to tell the community – “Here’s what we have accomplished.”
