The session title ‘Your Journey Into Leadership’ had no mention of a map, GPS or other way finder for this journey – the 60 participants of the new (best) class of 2018 arrived with eyes wide open and trepidation of the introductions exercise…and of head shots! The professionals at Simple Media Productions put all at ease and worked their photo shop miracles; headshots are available to each class member as a benefit of participation in Leadership Brevard.
LEAD Brevard board members/alumni
LEAD Brevard board chairman, Josh Field LB '07, Parrish Healthcare, welcomed the class, shared LEAD Brevard’s goals for the program and led a conversation with other LEAD Brevard board members/alumni. Dale Dupree LB ’17, Zeno Office Solutions; Gina Kaiser ’05, FLORIDA TODAY Communications, Gannett Co., Inc.; Dale Ketcham ’86, Space Florida; Kim Rezanka ’02, Cantwell & Goldman, P.A.; and Vinnie Taranto ’14, Media-Over-Matter Productions LC shared their leadership perspectives and their personal take on important leadership characteristics.
Peer introductions were one of the highlights of the day; using a rhyme, a poem and/or song, classmates introduced each other – here’s what several of them had to say ‘after’ the exercise:
glad to have met more people (leaders) from all walks of life; amazed at how much talent is in this class – wow! And the new friends I met today.
Vocalist (and class member) Mel Scott and Theresa Clifton were featured in a news story in FLORIDA TODAY; columnist (and class member) Jessica Saggio wrote a column and will do so monthly; watch for it in your daily newspaper!

The afternoon sessions featured Frank Abbate, Brevard County Manager; Mario Busacca '97, KeyStone Strategies; and Jacob Stuart, Orlando Economic Partnership. Again, testimonial comments from the class say it best:
Brevard County is the best county in central Florida: Learning how the activities of all of Central Florida impact us in Brevard County; How much Brevard County is growing and the demands of the future and a clear picture of how Brevard is connected to the Central Florida region. While Leadership Orlando may be the largest community leadership program; Leadership Brevard is the best community leadership program.
The 2018 Leadership Action Projects (LAP) were on deck during the last session of the day and vied for the talents of the members of the class; seven LAP’s will be part of the Leadership Brevard program this year. There have been 172 LAP's’s completed since 1986 with an average of 2,500 volunteer hours annually and a financial impact of $1.755 million dollars over 32 years. LAP partner organizations this year are: Aging Matters in Brevard, “Pets on Wheels”; Brevard Achievement Center, “Planning for the Future Care of Adults with Developmental Disabilities”; Brevard Homeless Coalition, “Affordable Housing in Brevard County”; The Children’s Hunger Project, “Feed 500 Campaign Video”; Guardian Ad Litem (GAL), 18th Circuit, “Encouraging Volunteers to Take Leadership Roles”; Junior League of South Brevard, “Girl POWER” and LEAD Brevard, Inc. with the Board Doctor, LLC, “Leadership IMPACT: Matching Leadership Brevard Alumni with Nonprofit Organizations Needing Skilled Board Members”.
